$20m For TAFEs Aims To Add Skills
22 January 2008, The Age
Victoria’s TAFEs will receive an additional $20 million in funding this year.
Victorian Premier John Brumby said the funding was vital given Victoria was “not a resource but a skills economy,” also stating that “we’ve got the best skills anywhere in Australia. Last year we trained more apprentices and more trainees than any other state.”
“We generally spend about $40-$50 million a year on TAFE equipment and facilities, so this is close to a 50% boost.” Mr Brumby said.
The State Government funding will be shared among Victoria’s 18 TAFEs.
Also included in the package is $5 million to help TAFEs cut their water and energy use and $5 million for IT resources.

Interstate and international students have also jumped on board and a strong demand for agriculture and environmental courses, which has been put down to a rush for places at Melbourne, has also been seen.
Melbourne has announced that it will offer 5885 commonwealth supported places in 29 bachelor degrees, an increase from last year.
