I am currently commencing my Honours degree in structural biology at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. My project focuses on the structure and interaction studies of proteins involved in immune regulation and inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Understanding how these proteins associate with one another will hopefully lead to the development of new and better drugs for treating these diseases.

Prior to undertaking my Honours, I completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science course in Melbourne and also worked as an undergraduate research student. One of the best things about studying in Melbourne is that I am getting work experience in my field of study that I would not have the opportunity to do at home. The university helps us find this work as part of our studies.

I have enjoyed every aspect of my student life in Melbourne. My university offers plenty of work opportunities for students who would like to get relevant exposure in their field of study. Since Melbourne is home to many prestigious research institutes, many of my lecturers are leading scientists in their field. This enables me to keep up to date with the current research of the day, not to mention learning from the very best!

Because Melbourne is a multi-cultural city one gets the chance to meet people from all over the world. The people here, especially the locals, are the friendliest and most helpful people I have ever encountered.

There is much to see and do in Melbourne. Since I live in the centre of the city in an apartment I am close to every facility imaginable. I love going to Victoria Market for its wide choice of inexpensive and fresh foods, as well as to beautiful St Kilda Beach.

The major surprise when I first arrived in Melbourne was the weather which is very erratic at times. It can be very cold one day and very hot the next! Nevertheless, it is easy to adapt to after a while.

My advice to someone considering studying in Melbourne is to be receptive to change and not get bogged down by transition issues. There are lots of great opportunities to seize and enjoy here. Choose your course wisely and ensure it is something you will absolutely love doing. This will make your study here much more enjoyable.

I plan to do a PhD once I have completed my Honours. I believe that a postgraduate qualification is essential to fulfil my career aspiration in medical research. Studying science in Melbourne has certainly confirmed my career goals and helped me take the steps necessary to make it happen.
